Organizar a las empleadas domésticas para formar un sindicato ha sido una tarea bastante difícil debido a las características de esta ocupación, la falta de educación escolar de sus miembros y la tradicional infravaloración y desprecio que genera una actividad tan importante. No son muchos los que conocen que existe una historia relativamente larga de intentos de organización de estas trabajadoras y que en la década de 1940 la fundación del primer sindicato del servicio doméstico fue establecida por una iniciativa de la Iglesia Católica a través de la llamada Acción Católica. El propósito de este trabajo es reconstruir parte de esta historia, resaltando el sesgo paternalista de la organización y, aunque el movimiento contaba con un liderazgo femenino, las actividades y el desarrollo del sindicato estaban determinados por el apoyo dado por el clero y la institución eclesiástica. Además, aunque en sus inicios fue una organización laica, el sindicato sirvió para la creación de dos órdenes religiosas femeninas.
