If you have been employed in an EU-wide country, you can make use of the periods contributed to access unemployment benefits in other countries of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland.

Persons who are not EU/EEA or Swiss nationals and who meet the conditions may export unemployment benefits to the United Kingdom, in application of EC Regulation 859/2003, which allows export for a period of 3 months without the possibility of extension.

On December 31, 2020, free movement between the United Kingdom and the European Union ended, and on January 1, 2021, the United Kingdom implemented a points-based immigration system that prioritizes skills and talent, rather than where a person is from.

If you were not resident in the UK before December 31, 2020 and do not have rights under the Withdrawal agreement, you will have to meet specific requirements to be able to work or study in the UK from January 1, 2021. You will also have to pass relevant checks, including criminal record checks in the UK. You can continue to visit the UK for up to 6 months without needing to apply for a visa, and can engage in a wide range of activities including tourism, visiting family and friends, undertaking short-term study and business-related activities such as attending events and conferences. A full list of permitted visitor activities is available on GOV.UK.

London has withdrawn its participation in the Erasmus student exchange program.  Students choosing England as their Erasmus destination in the 2020/21 academic year will not notice Brexit. Despite the fact that part of their course will take place in 2021, although the transition period has already ended, they will be able to complete their scholarship as before, as they have started before the end of the transition period. However, for those who intend to apply for their Erasmus grant in 2021/22, this will change depending on the outcome of future negotiations.
