An approved eTA confirms that a foreign national meets the criteria for visa-free travel to Canada and serves as a visa waiver document. Although a visa waiver such as an eTA serves much the same purpose as a visa, the method of obtaining one is very different from obtaining a visa. Applying for a standard visitor visa to Canada is a much more time-consuming process, but eTA applicants usually receive a response to their application in just a few minutes.
Holders of an approved eTA can stay in Canada for up to six months, however, Canadian border officials will determine the exact duration upon arrival and will generally stamp the exact duration in the applicant’s passport.
The online application takes approximately ten minutes per traveler. You will need to ensure that you have a valid passport, travel and contact information for each traveler, along with the credit or debit card to pay the requested eTA fee. With a valid eTA you can travel to Canada as often as you wish for short stays (usually for periods of up to six months at a time). You do not need an eTA to travel within Canada.
