London metropolitan area
The etymology of London is uncertain. It is a very old toponym that appears in sources from the 2nd century A.D. By 121 A.D. it is cited as Londinium, a term that points to a Britano-Roman origin of the settlement. The first attempt at clarification, now discarded, is attributed to Godfrey of Monmouth, who in his Historia Regum Britanniae argued that the toponym came from a certain King Lud who supposedly took the city and named it Kaerlud. Two recent discoveries indicate that London may have been inhabited in prehistoric times, and that the city may have been inhabited in prehistory.
Two recent discoveries indicate that London may have been inhabited in prehistoric times. In 1999 the remains of a Bronze Age bridge were found on the north bank of Vauxhall Bridge. This ancient bridge may well have crossed the Thames or provided access to a now-defunct island in the middle of the river. Dendrology dates the timbers found to around 1500 BC. In 2010 the foundations of a large timber structure dated to around 4500 BC were also found on the bank of the Thames, south of Vauxhall Bridge, although the function of this Mesolithic work is unknown. Both sites are on the south bank of the river, at a natural crossroads where the River Effra flows into the Thames. Dreamstime EXPANSIONMost affluent urbanites will resist the pandemic, paying very low interest rates to work from home.Fortunately, the drummer who lives above us has moved out. I guess he couldn’t afford to live in the center of Paris when the concerts were cancelled. The coffee shop on the corner has closed, and more will do so given the new 9pm curfew imposed on the city. There are lines at the food bank across the street from my office.
Most affluent urbanites will resist the pandemic, paying very low interest rates to work from home. A minority of the middle class will have to sell – airline pilots, marketing and advertising executives, conference organizers and the like – but there is an almost unlimited supply of wealthy people around the world waiting to buy apartments in the best cities.
The big cities will bounce back. The mining towns of Northern England did not, but they had only one industry, whereas a big city has many. Within a decade, the lowest paid service sector workers will once again fill the poorest neighborhoods. Then cities will again have to choose their answer. Make these people’s lives bearable by setting a local minimum wage, like the $15 an hour that New York imposed on all workers on December 31, weeks before the pandemic broke out? Automate the lowest paid jobs like cleaning, maintenance and selling cappuccinos? Build cheap housing for essential workers like nurses and police officers? Or exploit yet another generation of the urban precariat?

¡Gracias, Mike!
