What is subtle discrimination?

Discrimination due to lack of education

However, attention to overt forms of prejudice should not distract attention from more subtle forms. In fact, social science data show that people are much more likely to encounter subtle forms of prejudice. These subtle discriminatory behaviors are often unintentional and may reflect subconscious beliefs about the characteristics of women or people of color.

Subtle discrimination can be a cause of stress: people naturally spend much more time ruminating and trying to decipher a situation where there is ambiguous bias, compared to a clear case of sexism. This analysis, the longer it goes on, can be significantly taxing on cognitive and emotional resources.

Another reason subtle discrimination is stressful is because it is more frequent than obvious instances of discrimination. Because victims may face these slights on a daily basis, the negative effects of subtle discrimination can accumulate at a very rapid rate.

In Umm al Fahm, for example, one of the largest Palestinian towns in the Galilee, there are 184 daily trips on 26 different routes. But in the Jewish town of Pardes Hannah, which is smaller than Umm al Fahm, there are 694 daily trips on 33 bus lines. In the Palestinian town of Kafr Qasem there are 62 daily trips on a single line, while in the neighboring Jewish town of Shoham there are 232 daily trips on 27 different lines. Discrimination to the detriment of Arabs is seen in virtually all walks of life, but the authorities do absolutely nothing to correct it.”

The experience accumulated over decades of institutional intervention against discrimination based on sex, on the one hand, and the persistence of situations of inequality between women and men in the labor market, on the other, has shown that this type of discrimination does not disappear, but becomes increasingly “subtle”. This has led to the need to make progress in defining the concept of discrimination, distinguishing mainly between two types of forms it can take:

If we look at the results of an intervention “equal for women and men”, we will realize that these reproduce the initial inequalities (the gender gap, represented in red, is maintained).
